The story revolves around the hijacking of a famous mall in Chennai. Anand Raj as a police officer and Livingston as a politician enter the scene. Yogi Babu is introduced as a watchman who has a dog and observes things others don’t see. No one takes him seriously, but he makes a hero entry while mimicking Ajith’s ‘I am back’ punchline, and it does seem like he will save the day.

The film is a satire and the teaser parodies events that made headlines in Tamil Nadu recently. There are references to pseudo-science sermons made by godman Nithyananda, the plagiarism of film posters, the government’s ban on movies after politicians term it anti-Indian, the Sterilite protests where policemen stood on top of a van to open fire, and even actor Sivakumar’s selfie controversy.

Director Sam Anton is known for his comedy films. He made his debut with the horror-comedy Darling in 2015 which introduced GV Prakash as an actor. Sam Anton later directed Enaku Inoru Paer Iruku and 100. Gurkha is Yogi Babu’s second film as the lead actor. He was seen as the lead in Kolamaavu Kokila, and also has Dharmaprabhu lined up for release.

The actor earlier told Silverscreen that he plays a full-length comedy role in Gurkha, however, it is not that of a typical hero. “I play a watchman in the movie. Though Sam Anton wrote the movie with me in mind, it’s not a hero role. At least, not the kind of heroes I grew up watching,” he said.
