How would it be if you and your mother went to college together? Helicopter Eela starring Kajol in the titular role explores this premise. Directed by Pradeep Sarkar from a story by Anand Gandhi who previously directed ‘Ship of Theseus’, Helicopter Eela hits theatres on September 7.
Riddhi Sen who plays Kajol’s son in the film motivates her to pursue her studies which she left off 22 years ago. Much to his dismay, she decides to join his college. Reminding Shah Rukh Khan’s college portion from Main Hoon Na, the trailer briefly shows Kajol made fun of at college for her age and looks.
Very soon she turns into a ‘celebrity’ when a newspaper features her story for being a single mother who has taken up studies after 22 years. This leads to her gaining acceptance among students. Her entire class crowds around her to get selfies clicked.
The trailer then shifts to how the mother and son keep running into each other at college. What is mildly annoying for the son in the beginning very soon turns out to be ‘suffocation’, eventually forcing him to leave home.

Eela is also said to have a flair for singing, writing and making music videos. The generation gap between the mother and son is depicted in a funny scene by referencing a phone and lunchbox. However, the trailer doesn’t speak about her husband. A piece of mirror takes her husband’s place in a photo album.
Also starring Neha Dhupia and Tota Roy Chaudhary, the movie is produced by Ajay Devgn.
The trailer assumes a serious tone towards the end showing the mother and son in an estranged situation. However, it does end on a funny note, strongly suggesting that it is a light-hearted movie.
