S Ve Shekher has lashed out at the CBFC for awarding Kabali an U certificate. The actor-director, in conversation with Silverscreen, said, “Kabali has many violent scenes, and yet it was given an U. Will children be able to watch the movie without getting scared?”
S Ve Shekher made these comments after his film Manal Kayiru 2 was given the U/A Certificate by the CBFC. He said, “I have been part of 90 films, directed one movie. All of them have been clean films that were given U. I always take care to make sure that the project can be watched by the whole family without any discomfort. When my sensibilities are such, how can I be a part of a film that gets an U/A?”
According to CBFC member Mathiazhagan, Manal Kayiru 2 has scenes that employ ‘double meaning’ dialogues, and some suggestive scenes. This was the main factor the movie was given an U/A, he said. “While the film has little to no violence, the scenes of sexual nature were instrumental in our decision to give it an U/A.”
Mathiazhagan also pointed out that the movie shows an actor handling a condom onscreen. “With such a scene, there’s really no way this can be given a U. We take time to deliberate over a film. We don’t just award certificates without thinking about it first.”
Shekher though refuted Mathaizhagan’s allegations. He said, “At a time when the Indian government is promoting sexual health, how is it that a condom cannot be shown onscreen? Why can’t we move ahead with the times?”
The actor has decided not to go to the Revising Committee, instead he has decided to file a case with the Madras High Court, and is at present trying to figure out the legal proceedings.
Manal Kayiru 2 is the sequel to the 1982 film of the same name. The comedy traced the life of Kittumani, a young man who has many expectations and requirements of his future wife. Manal Kayiru 2 tells the story of Kittumani’s daughter, played by Poorna, who also has a lot of conditions for her future husband. Visu has an important role in the project.
