Netflix has just announced that Korean director Hwang Dong-hyuk will be making an original series titled Round Six exclusively for the OTT platform.
The series is reportedly about a few people who fail at life for various reasons, but suddenly receive a mysterious invitation to participate in a survival game to win ten million US dollars. The game takes place at an unknown location, and the participants are locked up until there is a final winner. It will incorporate popular children’s games from the 1970s and 1980s of Korea, such as Squid Game (like tag).
The Korean director is known for his screenplay in movies like Crucible and The Fortress, the latter winning various awards including ‘Best Screenplay’ at the ‘Blue Dragon Film Awards’. His movie Miss Granny was a hit and has been remade China, Japan, Philippines and even in India by Telugu director B.V. Nandhini Reddy. Oh Baby, with actor Samantha Akkineni in the lead is based on his Korean film.
“I’m already thrilled at the prospect of introducing Round Six to global audience through Netflix. I also have high expectations for the great collaborative work I’ll be having with them,” said Dong-hyuk in a press statement
Netflix will be collaborating with the director for the first time though they’ve been commissioning a bunch of Korean movies for the past three years, including a remake of Designated Survivor, Love Alarm, Chief of Staff and spy drama Vagabond. The air date of this series is yet to be announced.
