Responding to Karan Johar’s statement saying women were objectified in item songs, Katrina Kaif says she has never felt objectified in her songs ‘Sheila Ki Jawani’ and ‘Chikni Chameli’.
In an interview recently, Karan Johar announced that his production house, Dharma Productions, will not feature item songs in their future projects. He said that there was nothing wrong in showing women dancing, and that didn’t necessarily qualify it as an item number. “But the moment you put a woman in the centre and a thousand men looking at her lustingly, it’s setting the wrong example. As a filmmaker I have made those mistakes and I will never do it again,” he said.
Dharma Productions has made songs like ‘Chikni Chameli’ with Katrina Kaif for Agneepath, ‘Mera Naam Mary Hai’ with Kareena Kapoor Khan for Brothers, and the title track of Kaal with Malaika Arora Khan. All of these were item numbers, and he won’t have such songs in his movies hereafter, said Karan.
According to a DNA report, Katrina responded by saying, “Madonna, who I’m sure we all know of, I don’t think she is feeling objectified. I don’t think Beyonce who performs in a swimsuit on stage is feeling objectified. It’s all about how you feel while you are performing that song.”

Following the success of her songs, she said she received appreciation from both men and women. She maintained that the intent of the song also mattered, and as long as the song was about celebrating dance, the problem of objectification never arises. “For me, my songs are a celebration of music and dance. And I enjoy dance,” she said.
Katrina Kaif is gearing up for the release of new movie Zero, which has a song titled ‘Husn Parcham’ featuring her exclusively. Directed by Aanand L Rai, the movie stars Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma in the lead. Release is on December 21.
