To Curb Piracy, Remo to Release Overseas a Day After Its Release in India

In a bid to curb piracy, the producers of Remo have decided not to release the movie overseas before its Indian release.

“Various methods are practised to curtail piracy by the stalwarts of the industry and we are contemplating and putting into practice this idea of a simultaneous release to bring the system back to normalcy. After all this is our trade of life, and we shall be brave to bring in systems which will benefit the industry on a longer run,” said RD Raja, head of 24 AM Studios in an official press release.

Remo, starring Siva Karthikeyan and Keerthi Suresh, is directed by Bhagyaraj Kannan. Set to release in India on October 7, Remo is produced by 24 AM Studios. The production house announced this news through their Twitter page.

Usually, overseas distributors hold premiere shows of Tamil films on Thursday evening, ahead of the India release. The distributors pay a huge amount to have such premiere shows, but it is common perception that most of the illegal filming in theatres happen during these premiere shows. In many cases, illegal copies are available for download on the internet even before the first shows of the film in India.

In May this year, popular film distributor Tirupur Subramaniam said, “Moreover, if there are 200 cases of piracy every year, almost 190 of them happen at overseas theatres in countries like Singapore and Malaysia. Why can’t the actors themselves get the overseas rights of films and release the film there two weeks after initial release?”

This is the first time such an initiative has been taken by a production house, and celebrities of Kollywood have welcomed the move and expressed their support through tweets.
