The International Emmy Awards 2021 nominees were announced on Thursday and among them were actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Ram Madhvani’s web series Aarya, and Vir Das’ comedy special.
Siddiqui has been nominated in the Best Performance by an Actor category for Sudhir Mishra’s Hindi film Serious Men, which premiered on Netflix. Based on Manu Joseph’s 2010 novel of the same name, the film saw Siddiqui play the role of a Tamil Dalit man working as a personal assistant to a Brahmin man at a scientific research institute.
The actor will compete with Christian Tappan (The Great Heist), David Tennant (Des), and Roy Nik (Normali) in the category.
Disney+ Hotstar’s Aarya, which stars Sushmita Sen, has been nominated in the Best Drama Series category, alongside El Presidente, Tehran and There She Goes.
Aarya was Sen’s comeback to the screen after a long gap. The series is an adaptation of the Dutch crime thriller Penoza, which follows the life of a woman who joins the mafia to avenge her husband’s murder and protect her family.
The Netflix comedy special Vir Das: For India bagged a nomination in the comedy category alongside popular French show Call My Agent, UK’s Motherland: Christmas Special, and Colombian series Promesas de Campana.
The special, which was Das’ third with Netflix, released in January 2020.

The three nominations for India this year come after filmmaker Richie Mehta‘s Delhi Crime won the Best Drama Series honour at the 48th International Emmy Awards in November 2020. Apart from this, there were two other nominations for the country last year: Amazon Prime Video‘s Four More Shots Please! in the Best Comedy category and Arjun Mathur for his role in the drama Made in Heaven in the Best Actor category.
