Jaya Jaya Jaya JAYA HEY, the upcoming Malayalam film starring Darshana Rajendran and Basil Joseph will be a feel-good family film, director Vipin Das told Silverscreen India. The film’s first-look poster was released by the makers, on Wednesday.
After the premiere of the Malayalam film Jan-E-Man, the Cheers Entertainments banner is producing Jaya Jaya Jay JAYA HEY, with Lakshmi Warrier and Ganesh Menon as its producers.
Speaking to Silverscreen India, filmmaker Vipin Das said, “The film follows the life of an average Indian girl, who is in her twenties. Darshana plays the titular role of Jaya and Basil essays her husband’s character. The story explores various elements that this young woman faces at home and in the outside world”.
The director noted that the film is completely set in the Kollam district of Kerala. According to him, Kollam has a significant history of empowering women. The women from the district, were known for venturing out to take up jobs at cashew and Choir factories, earlier. Additionally, several female labour organisations were first set up at the district. So, when Das chose to go with a female-centred theme for the film, he decided to set the story in Kollam.
The film’s script was written by Das, along with his friend Nashid Mohamed Famy. “It took us two years to finish the script. We have written this story, with a mix of satire as we wanted the film to be light-hearted and humorous. Most of the incidents in the film are inspired by real life and will be relatable to audiences, at the grassroots,” he added.
Das spoke about the film’s casting and mentioned that he first pitched the story to Basil, as he was capable of doing realistic comedy, potentially adding vibrance to the story. He also said that, as per his vision, Darshana would be apt to play the role of a small-town girl, adding to the relatability factor.

Das noted that they will finalise other artists and the technical crew, in the upcoming weeks. The team is planning to begin with pre-production in February and are hoping to start filming in May, if the Covid-19 situation permits. As of now, the team has finalised the script and has scouted for locations. The filmmaker made his directorial debut with Mudhugavu in 2016. His next film titled Antakshari is all set to stream soon, on Sony Liv.
Meanwhile, Basil recently directed Malayalam cinema’s first superhero film Minnal Murali and Darshana was last seen in Hridayam.
