Jayaram May Be Part Of ‘Ponniyan Selvan’

Malayalam actor Jayram is reportedly in talks for an important role in director Mani Ratnam’s big budget film based on Kalki’s novel Ponniyan Selvan. 

The spokesperson for the film maintains that nothing can be confirmed as yet. However, various reports say Jayaram will be giving his nod soon. Details about his role are not known yet.

The actor, known for portraying versatile roles, was last seen in Lonappante Mamodeesa, and currently has Marconi Mathai with Vijay Sethupathi. The film created a buzz recently when the first-look poster released. Jayaram stars as an ex-army man and Sethupathi, who is making his Malayalam debut, plays himself. Jayaram also has Party, Pattabhiraman and a film with Sathyan Anthikad under production.

The pre-production work on the Ponniyan Selvan adaptation has been on for months now. It was recently speculated that Mani Ratnam was ill and admitted in the hospital, but his family confirmed in reports that the news was false and said work on the film was on track.

As reported earlier, Jayam Ravi is likely to play Arulmozhivarman, who becomes Raja Raja Cholan, Vikram plays Aditya Karikalan, Aishwarya Rai is Nandhini, the character who plans the downfall of the Chola kingdom, Telugu actor Mohan Babu is Pazhuvetarayar, Keerthy Suresh is Kunthavai Naachiyaar, Amitabh Bachchan is Sundara Chola, and Amala Paul plays Vaanathi.

Vijay Sethupathi, Karthi and Simbu have also been reportedly been approached.

Attempts to adapt the five volume novel have been made by others in the past. Mani Ratnam planned Ponniyin Selvan 15 years back, and reports about him reviving the project began doing the rounds since January this year. The film is expected to begin shoot in December.

Meanwhile, Soundarya Rajinikanth has also announced a web series adaptation of Ponniyan Selvan. She is reportedly the creative director of the series and will be co-producing it with Mx Player. Direction will be by Sooriyaprathap S, a history scholar who has worked with director KS Ravikumar and Soundarya before.

She tweeted the news and said, “Ponniyin Selvan – This is THE EPIC. I have to and want to do justice to it and do it right. Taking all efforts to ensure the initial work is done with all clarity. Will surely update all on progress god bless us !!!”
