Kaanthan: The Lover Of Colours was adjudged the Best Film by a jury headed by Kumar Shahani. Shyamaprasad won the Best Director award for his film Oru Njayarazhcha (A Sunday), according to IE.

A total of 104 films were submitted to the academy for the awards. Out of these 100 were feature films and four were children’s movies.

Jayasuriya won the Best Actor award for his performances in Njan Marakutty and Captain. The former saw him in the role of a trans woman, and in the latter he starred as Indian football team captain V.P.Sathyan.

Soubin Shahir’s win has come as a surprise for many who thought Fahadh Faasil, Mohanlal and Joju George were strong contenders for the Best Actor award.

Shoubin’s role as the manager of a local football club in Malappuram, who becomes friends with a Sudani – in the movie aptly titled Sudani from Nigeria – won the hearts of the people. The movie also won its director Zacharia Mohammed the award for the Best Debut Director.

Meanwhile, Joju George won the Best Character Actor award for his performances in Joseph and Chola. Nimisha Sajayan won the Best Actress award for Chola and Oru Kuprasiddha Payyan. Her portrayal of a lawyer batting for a wrongly persecuted man was appreciated when the movie released.

Vijay Yesudas and Shreya Ghoshal won the Best Singer awards, while Bollywood composer Vishal Bharadwaj won the award for the Best Music Director for his songs in Carbon.
