A slipper/sandal was recently thrown at Kamal Haasan, who has been the centre of controversy since his Godse remark. The incident occured during a political campaign in which the Makkal Needhi Maiam founder was speaking.

Referring to an incident from a book on Gandhi that Parthiban had gifted him Kamal said that it was relevant to Oththa Serupu. He said, “Once, Gandhi was standing at the edge of a train, waving at the huge crowd there to see him. Just then one of his slippers fell off. So he bent swiftly and threw out the other one too. When asked why, he said that one slipper was of no use to anyone. If there was a pair someone else could wear both.”

Kamal said, “I’m a fan of Gandhi. One of those slippers has reached me and I’m confident the other will too. But for that to happen, I cannot change the person I see as my hero and accept the villain as my hero.”

He further said politicians were known for making every stage their own, and he didn’t want to do it here. He said he was proud to attend Parthiban’s film event and his expectations were high for Oththa Seruppu. “Parthiban joins the list of my favourite top actors like Tom Hardy and Robert Redford who have played solo cast member in their films.”

Parthiban presented a torch-shaped scepter to the actor-politician. Referring to Makkal Needhi Maiam’s torch symbol, he said Kamal was going to succeed in politics, and particularly now it was important that everyone supported and wished him.

“I’m a big fan of Kamal, everyone knows it. When I went to vote, people knew I was voting for Kamal. I don’t want to enter politics because the work will burn me. When someone who loves films so much decides to enter politics to do good for the people it needs to be supported,” Parthiban said.

Directors K Bhagyaraj, Shankar, KS Ravikumar, Lingusamy, the film’s music composer Santhosh Narayanan, sound designer Resul Pookutty and others were also present at the event.
