The film’s first look poster was recently released by actors Nivin Pauly, Suraj Venjaramoodu and Aju Varghese via social media. Produced by Vinayaka Ajith under the banner of Ajith Vinayaka Films, Kanakarajyam is written by Sagar as well.

Kanakarajyam is a simple film that is inspired by a real-life incident that happened many years ago, back in my hometown Alleppey in Kerala,” says the director.

Sagar, who took two years to develop the script, reveals that he has borrowed some elements from films that inspired him to develop Kanakarajyam. “Indrans plays a security guard named Ramanathan and Murali plays Menon, a common man. Adhira Patel and Jolly essay Indran’s daughter and wife, respectively. Murali’s performance in the film will bring forth a nostalgic glimpse of his father, late actor Bharat Gopy,” he adds.

The film also features Leona, Dinesh Prabhakar, Kottayam Ramesh, Rajesh Sharma, and Remya Suresh, among several others.

Noting that the film will be relatable to different kinds of audiences, Sagar says, “Kanakarajyam was shot in parts of Kollam and Kottarakkara by cinematographer Abilash Shankar, who has previously worked on Kettyolaanu Ente Malakha. We specifically picked locations that are not explored a lot in Malayalam films. Filming began in February and was wrapped up in 35 days. We still have a three-day shoot pending. At present, we have begun with post-production and dubbing.”

Kanakarajyam is edited by Ajeesh, while Arun Muraleedharan, who earlier worked on Anugraheethan Antony, has composed the film’s music. Sagar says that the team is aiming for a theatrical release by the end of June or July.

Meanwhile, Indrans, who was last seen in Aarattu, has multiple other projects lined up, including Shubhadinam and Bermuda.

Sagar made his directorial debut with Kumbarees (2019). He went on to helm Sathyam Mathrame Bodhippikku (2022) and Veekam (2022).
