Actors Akshay Kumar and Kiara Advani have started shooting for the Hindi remake of Kanchana, which has been titled Laaxmi Bomb. Actor Amitabh Bachchan is part of the cast, the film’s spokesperson told Silverscreen. The original director Raghava Lawrence is also directing the remake. Official announcement regarding Amitabh’s role is awaited, but he is likely to reprise Sarathkumar’s character as a transwoman from the original. Akshay Kumar reprises Raghava’s role as the protagonist, and Kiara plays his girlfriend. The story has been modified with a strong role for Kiara, said the source.
The film is not a straightforward remake but the premise draws from both Muni and Kanchana. “The team has been working on the script for over six months and has added several new dimensions to the original film,” the source said earlier. Akshay Kumar plays a man encountering a ghost, and this forms the crux of the story. The remake is planned as a revenge drama like Kanchana: Muni 2. The original Tamil film released in 2011, with a story revolving around a man possessed by the ghost of a trans woman who wants revenge from an MLA who murdered her family in a land-grabbing case.
The Hindi remake is scheduled for a 2020 release. The rest of the cast and crew is yet to be announced. Lakshmi Rai, Kovai Sarala, Devadarshini and Sriman played supporting roles in the original film. S Thaman was the music director, cinematography was by Vetri, and editing by Kishore Te.
Meanwhile, Kanchana 3: Muni 4 is running successfully in Telugu and Tamil with collections exceeding Rs 100 crore in the first week alone. The film released during Easter weekend and has earned more than the previous movies in the installment.
