Krishna Raj Kapoor, wife of late actor Raj Kapoor, died earlier today of cardiac arrest, her family members confirmed. She was 87, and is survived by three sons and two daughters.
“My mother passed away at about 5 am today due to cardiac arrest…old age was another factor. We are deeply saddened by her demise,” her eldest son Randhir Kapoor was quoted in a PTI report. The last rites will be performed at the Chembur crematorium, he said.
Her sons – actors Randhir Kapoor and Rajiv Kapoor – are currently in Mumbai, as are her grandchildren actors Ranbir Kapoor, Karishma Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor. Rishi Kapoor, meanwhile, had left for the USA for medical treatment a couple of days back.
Hello all! I am taking a short leave of absence from work to go to America for some medical treatment. I urge my well wishers not to worry or unnecessarily speculate. It’s been 45 years “plus”of wear and tear at the movies. With your love and good wishes,I will be back soon!

Ranbir Kapoor was quoted talking about his grandmother in a recent interview. “We meet every Sunday at our grandmother’s place where she has this amazing spread of food, several Peshawari dishes. The entire family comes and we spend the entire day there chatting, speaking about each other’s work and experience… hearing the time when Shammi Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor were actors. My grandmother used to tell us stories about my grandfather. It’s awesome just to hear these stories. It is nostalgic and it is history,” he said.
Several other celebrities took to Twitter to express their grief.
If Raj Kapoor was an institution in film making, Krishnaji was an institution in living life.
A very sad loss to all of us.
My love and warmth to Randhirji, Rishiji, Chimpuji, Reema, Rituji and everyone in the family.

Krishna’s husband, actor Raj Kapoor, died three decades ago in 1988, of complications related to asthma. The film he was working on – Henna, an Indo-Pakistan love story – was later completed by his sons Rishi Kapoor and Randhir and released in 1991.
