Tamil actor Silambarasan’s parents, T Rajendar and Usha Rajendar have petitioned the Chennai city police commissioner to look into the postponement of their son’s upcoming film, Maanaadu.

Addressing the media on Wednesday, the husband-and-wife duo alleged that there were forces in the industry that were causing issues for the release of each of Silambarasan’s films.

Their complaint comes in the wake of the makers of Maanaadu postponing the release of the film, which was scheduled to hit theatres on November 4 for Diwali, alongside films like Annaatthe and Enemy.

On Monday, producer Suresh Kamatchi, who is backing the Venkat Prabhu directorial, said in a press statement that the film’s release has been pushed to November 25. He noted the reasoning behind the change was to avoid incurring any losses for distributors and theatre owners due to Maanaadu being released alongside the other big budget films.

This decision has not gone well with Silambarasan’s parents. At Wednesday’s press meet, Usha claimed that each of her son’s films has consistently faced such problems. “Michael Rayappan produced a film titled AAA (Anbanavan Asaradhavan Adangadhavan), which suffered losses. The producer is the one who should be held responsible in this case. But, they are claiming that Silambarasan should compensate for the losses. They are using a kangaroo court method to settle the matter. And they have been causing trouble for every one of Silamabarasan’s films since. Each time, they extort money from us before the release of the film.”

It is to be noted that when Silambarasan acted in the 2017 film AAA produced by Michael Rayappan, the latter had blamed the actor for the film’s failure.

Usha also alleged that distributor Arulpathi, who founded the Tamil Nadu Current Distributors’ Association, was responsible for preventing Maanaadu’s release now. The couple added that the people who were threatening them and extorting money from them claim to have political influence. Noting that this damages the image of the government, the couple further said that they were ready to even fast in front of the chief minister’s house to find a resolution to this issue, which was affecting not just their son but the entire industry.

Emphasizing that the Tamil Nadu Current Distributors’ Association is not a democratically elected body, Rajendar said that the organisation has been creating problems for the release of several films. Many small-time filmmakers and producers have been affected by this, he added.

Silambarasan has not commented on the issue so far.
