The film, written and directed by filmmaker Karthick Naren, will be his maiden collaboration with Dhanush. It is backed by Sendhil Thyagarajan and Arjun Thyagarajan under the Sathya Jyothi Films production banner, which has earlier produced the Dhanush starrers Thodari (2016) and Pattas (2020). Maaran is co-produced by G Saravanan and Sai Siddharth.

Besides Dhanush, the film will also feature actor Malavika Mohanan, who was last seen in the Tamil film Master (2021), as the female lead and actors Samuthirakani, Smruthi Venkat, Krishna Kumar, and Mahendran in pivotal roles. GV Prakash is the music composer for Maaran.

The film, which was announced by the makers in February 2020 through a poster, went on floors in January 2021. However, production later came to a halt due to the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Soon after the release of Dhanush’s Jagame Thandhiram in June, the actor flew to the US to shoot for Russo Brothers’ The Gray Man. Once the Tamil Nadu government granted permissions for film shootings to begin in the state, in the end of June, the actor returned to the country and the final schedule of shooting for Maaran began in July.
