At midnight, as the 28th of August dawned, director Mohan Raja chose to make one of the most-expected announcements in Tamil cinema – the sequel of Thani Oruvan, his most popular collaboration with his brother Jayam Ravi. The director made this announcement on the third anniversary of Thani Oruvan‘s release.
The filmmaker, whose previous film is the blockbuster Velaikkaran, took to his official Twitter handle to make the announcement.
Jayam Ravi will reprise his role as Mithran IPS in Thani Oruvan 2, which will be his 25th film. Other details regarding the cast and crew are yet to be revealed. Arvind Swami’s involvement in the sequel is also not known. He made a huge impact as the antagonist Siddharth Abhimanyu in the first instalment.
We have more responsibility to live up to everyone’s expectations and look forward to your blessings and wishes, the brothers say in the video. According to a report in Cinema Express, Raja hinted about the sequel even in May 2016, while replying to a fan on Twitter. When asked, “Can we expect a sequel to Thani Oruvan?” Raja had tweeted, “Sure. Ravi’s 25th film, hopefully.”
Thani Oruvan (2015) was a landmark film in many ways. It forever did away with the tag of ‘Remake Raja’ that was used to describe Mohan Raja, and showed what kind of script he was capable of. The film did not dumb down the audience as it showcased the stand-off between righteous police officer Mithran and the suave but cunning entrepreneur Siddharth Abhimanyu. The film won over both the audience and critics, and became Jayam Ravi’s highest grossing film till then.
Hiphop Tamizha Aadhi’s music for the original is still popular, and it is expected that he will join the team for the sequel too.
Ravi was last seen in space film Tik Tik Tik. He is working on Adanga Maru, directed by by newcomer Karthik Thangavel, in which he plays a fiery cop again, and an yet-to-be titled project to be directed by Ahmed of Manithan fame.
