Aaraattu, the Mohanlal-starrer that was released on Friday, has collected Rs 17.80 crore at the global box office in its first three days, the actor shared on social media on Tuesday.
Produced by RD Illuminations and Sakthi (MPM Group), Aaraattu is written by Udayakrishna and directed by B Unnikrishnan. As per the makers, the film was released on 2700 screens worldwide.
Aaraattu features a star cast that includes Shraddha Srinath, Siddique, Nedumudi Venu, Saikumar and Vijayaraghavan, among several others. The film was previously scheduled to release on February 10, but was eventually postponed to February 18.
Speaking to Silverscreen India, Sony Thomas, one of the Vice Presidents of Film Exhibitors United Organisation of Kerala (FEUOK), says, “Aaraattu is attracting audiences to the theatres. The film is being showcased at around 650 screens in Kerala. On the first day, almost all theatres had fan screenings. After this, shows for the general public began and these were also fully sold out.”
The action-entertainer follows the story of Neyyatinkara Gopan, played by Mohanlal. As per Silverscreen India’s review, “When Mathai (Vijayaraghavan), a multi-millionaire loan shark of a Palakkad village lands in a legal soup, unable to convert his acres of paddy field into a residential plot, he hires a stranger, Neyyattinkara Gopan, to get him out of the tangle.”
In her review, Aswathy Gopalakrishnan adds, that Aaraattu is not a movie made for critical dissection and says the film has the “tone of a TikTok video” and “functions like an inside joke shared among the superstar’s most loyal fans who would gladly take any bitter pill that he hands out.”
Aaraattu is Mohanlal’s first theatrical release of 2022 and comes close on the heels of the actor’s last film, Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham, which hit screens in December. The actor’s other recent film, Bro Daddy, directed by and co-starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, had a direct OTT premiere on Disney+ Hotstar.
