On Monday, actress Madhubala (Madhoo) of Roja fame explained that her role in the film Agni Dev is fictional and is not inspired by any ‘real person’. Her disclaimer comes in the wake of news and memes that Madhoo’s character in the film is indirectly based on VK Sasikala, a close confidant of the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu J Jayalalithaa.
The actress also said that she loved the role because playing a negative character was new to her.

Agni Dev, staring Bobby Simha and Remya Nambeesan in the lead, is directed by Chennaiyil Oru Naal 2 fame John Paul Raj and Sham Surya. The film is said to be a crime-drama based on author Rajesh Kumar’s novel. An earlier film, the medical crime thriller Kuttram 23, was also based on his novel.
According to a report in Bollywood Life, director John Paul Raj said, “Rajeshkumar sir – whose novel I had adapted for my previous film – and I have collaborated on this script. This will be an original story, but we have taken some portions from his novels as well.”
The film is bankrolled by Seantoa Studio in association with Jai Film Productions. It also stars comedian Sathish and MS Bhaskar in pivotal roles. The trailer has the tagline – ‘The game between justice and power’ – and depicts the conflict between the hero and the antagonist.

The trailer, which was unveiled on Monday, also portrays the death of a journalist assigned to interview Bobby Simha (who plays a cop) before focusing on the film’s antagonist Madhoo. Actress Madhoo, who is named Shakunthala Devi in the film, is seen to be a powerful politician. Remya Nambeesan plays a journalist.
Madhoo hasn’t had releases on the silver screen over the last couple of years. Apart from Agni Dev, her other films slated to hit theatres in 2019 include Seetharama Kalyana and Premier Padmini in Kannada.
