Jyothika takes on patriarchy and the dirty underbelly of the society in Naachiyaar. Director Bala gives us vignettes of her life in this short teaser – she’s a cop, she’s a wife. The teaser which is mostly without any dialogues gets visceral towards the end when Jyothika is heard uttering an obscenity. It has predictably divided social media, as perhaps is the intention. But the film promises to be gritty.
The teaser has all the usual Bala trademarks. GV Prakash, in particular, has undergone a startling makeover to play a young criminal.
Bala’s last as filmmaker was the 2016 film Tharai Thappattai. The film opened to mixed reviews, but brought in a lot of acclaim for its leads. This time around, Bala will probably hope for both critical and box office success with Naachiyar.
