Varalakshmi Sarathkumar will headline a new film titled Neeya 2. The director tells Silverscreen that the film is not a retelling of yesteryear hit Neeya?. Instead, it uses elements from the original film to produce a fresh new story. Jai, Raai Laxmi and Catherine Tresa have signed on to play lead roles in the movie.
In conversation with Silverscreen, Suresh said: “Neeya was a very path breaking film when it released in the seventies. It was iconic. Our intent is not to remake the movie and so that’s why we have titled our film Neeya 2. We have taken some plot elements from the first film for Neeya 2. Thats all. The new movie is a violent love story. We have used some special effects for the movie.”
One of the highlights of the new production is the use of a 22 feet snake in some scenes. It was a difficult proposition for the crew but they managed to make the best out of the situation, L Suresh says. “We did what we could to make the movie as authentic as possible. While the core element is love and revenge, everything else is fantasy.”
The iconic ‘Orey Jeevan Ondre Ullam’ song from Neeya? has been given a new twist for Neeya 2. “We got the rights of the song from the original composers Shankar-Ganesh. Music director Shabbir has given the song a makeover and it will be one of the highlights of the film,” Suresh said.
The director was also all praise for his ‘daring’ lead actor Varalakshmi Sarathkumar.

“She is an actor who is always so daring. She is up for anything and that quality really changes the dynamics of the scene and film, overall.”
Neeya? was a remake of Naagin. The fantasy film was about a female serpent who wanted to avenge the death of her beloved. She took on a female form in order to kill the people who caused the death of her lover. The Hindi original was itself inspired by Cornell Woolrich’s The Bride Wore Black.
