Three unreleased Tamil films will premiere at the 17th edition of the New York Indian Film Festival, taking place between April 30 and May 7. The movies that will be screened are Merku Thodarchi Maalai, Oru Kidayin Karunai Mani and Sigai.
An independent film consulting company, Viewfinder (VFC), will facilitate the screening of these movies at the festival. According to The Times of India, VFC Managing Director Dilani Rabindran said: “I’m happy that our company has helped to fill so much of the South Indian film bracket with such distinct films. They’re all uniquely entertaining in very different ways. We are grateful to have worked on them and I am really looking forward to being there in New York to share these quality Tamil movies with New York audiences.”
While Oru Kidayin Karunai Manu is having its international premier at the New York Indian Film Festival, both Merku Thodarchi Maalai and Sigai have been screened at Indian film festivals.
Merkhu Thodarchi Maalai has been directed by debutant Lenin Bharathi, and was bankrolled by actor Vijay Sethupathi. Ilaiyaraaja has composed music.
Oru Kidayin Karunai Manu has been directed by Suresh Sangiah. The movie stars Vidharth and Raveena in lead roles. Music has been composed by M Raghuram, while Praveen K L has handled the editing.
Sigai has been directed by Jagadeesh Babu, and will see actor Kathir donning the look of a woman in the movie. The actor spoke to TOI about it: “This is a completely different attempt. We were supposed to work on another project when Jagadeesan mentioned this script. The subject breaks all preconceived notions about a thriller. The movie is set in Anna Nagar and depicts events that happen in one day. There is no hero or heroine, but there are nine characters who are equally crucial to the plot, which is about how the life of a man changes in a day.”
The opening film at the festival is Alankrita Shrivastava’s Lipstick Under My Burkha.
