According to a report in News 18, at the event in Kerala the actor said he had not been drawn to politics in the 41 years of his acting career.

“In my 41 years of cinema life, I was never attracted to politics even once. We are not eligible for the post, it requires sacrifice and dedication we are not worthy of. If one wants to become the Chief Minister of the state, they should understand people’s problems and should have traveled with them.”

He further added that actors don’t enter politics to serve people. He told, “Actors get into politics for selfish reasons, and for the post and title ‘Chief Minister’. There is no actor who is eligible to be the Chief Minister.”

“I respect the Chief Minister of Kerala Pinarayi Vijayan, he is one of the most efficient politicians. Like him there are leaders in Tamil Nadu too. We should be careful while voting for a Chief Minister, and should not pick anyone from the cinema industry.”

He further said, “Like Pinarayi Vijayan, there are responsible leaders in Tamil Nadu like Nallakannu. I wish a communist leader would take charge of the state. I don’t think anyone else is eligible for the post. But I don’t know if that will happen.”

For more than four decades before Jayalalithaa’s death, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has been from Tamil cinema. Jayalalithaa took over the CM post from the leading actor and her mentor MG Ramachandran. DMK head M Karunanidhi was a poet and screen writer for most of the Tamil films those days.

After the demise of Jayalalithaa, Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan and other actors have announced entry into politics. Kamal has said that he will be contesting the 2019 parliament elections. Actor Prakash Raj recently joined the list of actors who have entered politics, and announced that he will be contesting elections from Bengaluru constituency.

Rajinikanth is yet to form his political party. Other actor turned politicians in Tamil Nadu are Sarathkumar, Seeman, Vijayakanth, Kushboo and Karunas.
