Oru Nakshathramulla Aakasham to Have OTT Release Soon

Malayalam film Oru Nakshathramulla Aakasham starring Aparna Gopinath, which won the Best Picture award at Washington DC South Asian Film Festival, will soon see an OTT release, said Ajith Pulleri, one of the directors of the film.

The film, directed by debut filmmakers Ajith and Suneesh Babu, touches upon the socially relevant issue of public schools, their conditions, and the plight of a teacher. Gopinath plays a rural school teacher and Eric Zachariah essays the role of a visually impaired student.

Released in Kerala last year, the film has been looking for a suitable OTT platform for a digital release. “We are in talks with Amazon Prime and Netflix. Let us see which one works out,” said Ajith.

Ajith thinks that streaming platforms are a good way of giving regional films more representation. “OTT platforms give more opportunity than theatres because there a big name or fan following is not needed. As a filmmaker, we can make more comfortable films and have creative freedom in OTT.”

The film was chosen among 60 entries sent from over nine countries in South Asia. Although the film brings up the conversation of the dire need for more government schools in Kerala, the story focuses on the teacher and her mindset about her students, the director told Silverscreen India.

Shot in parts of northern Kerala, Oru Nakshathramulla Aakasham is close to Ajith’s heart as both his parents are teachers.

His next venture is a story based on a man from northern Kerala. “I have finished the script and I’m currently looking for a production house to take it up. Discussions are on, let’s see,” the director told Silverscreen India.

Produced by MVK Pradeep, Oru Nakshathramulla Aakasham also stars Ganesh Kumar, Lal Jose, Anil Nedumangad, and Jaffer Idukki as supporting cast.
