Pathrosinte Padappukal, the upcoming Malayalam comedy entertainer, will revolve around a dysfunctional family living in Vypin, Ernakulam, the film’s scriptwriter and lead actor Dinoy Paulose told Silverscreen India.
Directed by debutant Afsal Abdul Latheef, the film will also feature Sharaf U Dheen, Grace Antony, Naslen K Gafoor, Ranjitha Menon and Suresh Krishna, among others, in pivotal roles. Afsal has earlier co-written the scripts for the Malayalam sitcom Uppum Mulakum and the film Djibouti.
Pathrosinte Padappukal was one of the films that began shooting when the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions were relaxed in Kerala after the first wave. Filming was completed in a 38-day schedule by the end of March. The cinematography was handled by Jayesh Mohan, who rose to fame with his work in Maayanadhi.
Dinoy, who is known for co-writing and acting in the Girish AD directorial Thanneer Mathan Dhinangal, says Pathrosinte Padappukal is currently in the post-production stage and the team is hoping for a theatrical release.
The film has music by Jakes Bejoy, and Sangeeth Prathap, who played the lead in the recently-released short film Vasheekaranam, written by Girish AD, is the film’s editor.
“After Thanneer Mathan Dhinangal, I had a film ready, but it did not take off due to the Covid-19 pandemic,” says Dinoy. “That’s when I decided to work on the story for another film that could potentially be released when theatres reopened. Lately, we have been seeing many thrillers and films targeting OTT platforms. But I, personally, wanted to watch some light-hearted content. So, I decided to make a full-fledged comedy film that could be enjoyed by the audience when they get back to theatres.”
Speaking about the film’s characters, Dinoy says the titular Pathrose is the patriarch of a family that runs a gas agency. He has four children: sons Sony (Sharaf U Dheen), Tony (Dinoy), Boney (Nasleen), and daughter Neenu. “Tony, the protagonist, is jobless and does not have any commitment. Sony is a loser who wanders around aimlessly, while Bonney is known to be a thief in the village. This big family lives in a small congested house and all of them have some issues. The film unfolds with the comic events happening around the siblings and their friends, and focuses on what happens when their grandmother arrives at their small house for a stay.”
Dinoy tells us he began pitching the story idea to potential producers while he was developing the film’s script in December 2020. “Several producers were not ready to back the film due to uncertainties in the wake of the pandemic, but Shahul Hameed Marikar’s production house, Marikar Entertainments agreed to produce as they liked the story.”
Dinoy began his career in the Malayalam film industry as an assistant director on the film Black Ticket. Later, he wrote scripts for director Girish AD and appeared in a few films, gaining recognition for playing Joyson, the elder brother of protagonist Jaisan, in Thanneer Mathan Dhinangal.
