Protests Against RGV’s Telugu Film ‘Vangaveeti’

Protests erupted against Ram Gopal Varma’s Vangaveeti in Vijayawada on Friday. The movie is said to be a biopic of politician Vangaveeti Mohana Ranga, who was murdered in Vijayawada in 1988. Members of the Radha Ranga Mitra Mandali, followers of Vangaveeti Radha Krishna – son of Vangaveeti Mohana Ranga, raised slogans outside theatres screening the film, and demanded the withdrawal of the film’s title as it does not reflect the facts.

The project has been mired in controversies since its release date. Following objections raised by the Radha Ranga Mitra Mandali, talks were initiated between the film’s makers and the protesters. This did not lead anywhere.

Vangaveeti Radha Krishna is also believed to have met the Director General of police N Sambasivarao and raised his objections with the movie.

Mr. Chandana Suresh, a close aid of Vangaveeti Radha Krishna, told DC that the movie is filled with half truths and does not depict the character of Mohana Ranga. “Projecting Ranga as a rowdy, ignoring all the good work he has done is objectionable and we object the way the character of Ratnakumari is shown in the film,” he said. “We are planning to approach the court to seek censoring of  objectionable content,” he added.

The film is said to be Ram Gopal Varma’s most violent. Considering the director’s track record thus far, that’s certainly saying something. CBFC seems to have thought along the same lines too, for the film hit theatres with an ‘A’ certificate. The filmmaker has announced that this will be his last Telugu film.
