Are geniuses born; or are they made? – National Geographic sets out to prod this question with their upcoming show Mega Icons. Come September, the five-part show hosted by R. Madhavan will focus on five personalities with different backgrounds and from various walks of life.

While the list of names include former President of India A.P.J Abdul Kalam, spiritual leader and Nobel Laureate, Dalai Lama and India’s first IPS officer Kiran Bedi, the producers have placed a safe bet by choosing the subjects for their first and second episodes as Virat Kohli and Kamal Haasan, two people from sections that have a religious fan following in India – cricket and films.

The show attempts to offer a scientific explanation as to what separates these minds by seeking the help of scientists and psychoanalysts. Shruti Takulia, Head – Productions, National Geographic & FOX Networks Group India was quoted as saying, “I could talk about the cinematic brilliance of the dramatic recreations we have shot. Or the intimate stories that come out through the interviews with India’s biggest icons and their closest ones.”

“However, what is really important about the show is the unique lens we have used to analyse the lives of these icons – using science to decipher if such inspirational personalities are born or made great. This unique format is what we believe will appeal to the National Geographic’s loyal, discerning viewer, who is fuelled by curiosity, and wants to deepen his understanding about the science and reason behind everything.”

The show’s host, Madhavan said, “We enjoy watching each ball rushing towards the fence from Virat’s bat. And the excellence that Kamal Hassan brings to the silver screen. But sometimes, we all sit back and wonder – what really has made these icons what they are today?”

The show will premiere in September, the date is yet to be announced.
