Ramya Krishnan’s ‘Queen’ Wins Best Original Programme Award at the Asian Academy Creative Awards 2020

Queen, the 2019 Tamil web series starring Ramya Krishnan, has won the Best Original Programme by a Streamer/OTT Award at the Asian Academy Creative Awards 2020. The series is loosely based on the life of late AIADMK leader and six-time Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu J Jayalalitha.

Krishnan thanked the Queen team for their performance against pan-Asian competitors on Tuesday:

Krishnan also pointed out that the series won the award on December 5 – the day the series began filming, and also the same day that Jayalalitha passed away.

Krishnan further wrote, “Content wins! Looking forward to the filming of Season 2 soon.”

The eleven-episode web series follows the life of Shakthi Seshadri (played by Ramya) as she goes from being a brilliant school student to a successful actor and, eventually, a powerful politician.

Helmed by filmmakers Gautam Vasudev Menon and Prasath Murugesan, Queen also stars Indrajith Sukumaran. Sukumaran’s character is loosely based on MGR, the late actor-turned-politician. Other prominent roles include Sonia Agarwal (Shakthi’s mother), and Vamsi Krishna (Shakthi’s lover). The series was written by Reshma Ghatala.

Queen has been renewed for a second season. In June, Ramya told IANS, as reported by the Hindustan Times, “I am just waiting to get there and be a part of it. People can expect more action, more interesting content, thrilling and exciting content.” She also said, ““We don’t have clarity on when shooting will start. With the quarantine right now, we are yet to know.” Further, “Last when I spoke to (writer) Reshma, she was done with the script. It’s all ready to go on floors but it all depends on the quarantine phase.”

Queen released exclusively on MX Player on December 14, 2019.
