Takht is helmed by Karan Johar, who returns to direction after 2016’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. The movie has an ensemble cast including Vicky Kaushal, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Bhumi Pednekar, Jahnvi Kapoor and Anil Kapoor.

Set in the Mughal era, Ranveer Singh essays the role of Shah Jahan’s elder son Dara Shukoh in the film. Vicky Kaushal portrays Aurangzeb, the younger son. Details of other characters have not been revealed yet.

Talking about the project, Ranveer Singh said in a Telegraph report, “I am sure a lot of people are saying Karan is making a period film but Takht is not far away from his genre. Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… was a family film and showed the internal dynamics of a family. Takht is the same at its core. In which period it’s set in and what costumes are they wearing is of no consequence. These are just decorations. At the core it’s family drama, it’s about love, greed, ambition, betrayal, brotherhood, dynamics between father-son, brothers and sisters.”

Ranveer Singh’s last two Bhansali movies were a portrayal of rulers. He essayed Peshwa Bajirao in Bajirao Mastani, and Alauddin Khilji in Padmaavat. Ranveer Singh said that he was the first actor to have been offered the new movie by Karan Johar. “The story is on such a delicious scale and there’s so much meat in it,” he said.

Though this is Johar’s first historical film, his production house, Dharma Productions, are releasing a slew of movies in the genre. Among them are Kesari starring Akshay Kumar, which is about the Battle of Saragarhi, and Kalank featuring Varun Dhawan, Aditya Roy Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit, Sonakshi Sinha and Alia Bhatt.
