Reese Witherspoon’s Legally Blonde 3 to Hit Theatres in May 2022

Reese Witherspoon’s Legally Blonde 3 will hit the theatres in May 2022, MGM Studios confirmed in a tweet on Wednesday. The iconic coming-of-age film will see Witherspoon reprise the role of Elle Woods.

The film was initially scheduled to release this February, but it did not come to fruition. The announcement of the new release date was made following the Legally Blonde virtual reunion featuring Witherspoon and her co-stars Selma Blair, Jessica Cauffiel, Jennifer Coolidge, Matthew, Ali Larter, Holland Taylor, Alanna Ubach, and Luke Wilson.

An emotional Witherspoon thanked her co-stars in the video and said, “I can’t tell you what it means to me to see your faces. This was my college. This is where I went to college. I didn’t finish college but I finished Legally Blonde.”

The film is co-produced by Witherspoon under Hello Sunshine studio along with the franchise’s original producer Marc Platt. While Jamie Suk is directing, the new film is scripted by Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor.

The first installment of Legally Blonde (2001) revolved around protagonist Elle who tries to win back her boyfriend by getting a law degree from Harvard University. The film proved to be a smash hit at the box office. The sequel Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde released in 2013 but did not fare as well as the first film. However, the third installment is eagerly awaited by the fans.

There has been no confirmation about the plotline of the film, but earlier in a chat with Ellen DeGeneres, the actor mentioned that she believes that it is the perfect time to bring back her witty character, which is obsessed with all things pink.

Witherspoon officially confirmed the film in 2018 when she posed in an Instagram video wearing the iconic ‘Elle bikini’. Since then, the film has gone through changes, from writers to the dates. However, fans are hopeful that the film will release in 2022.
