Rocky, the upcoming Tamil film starring actor Vasanth Ravi (of Taramani fame) and veteran filmmaker Bharathiraja, will release in theatres on December 23, announced director Vignesh Shivan, who is presenting the film.
Directed by debutant filmmaker Arun Matheswaran, the film is produced by CR Manoj Kumar under the Ra Studios banner.
Arun, who has also written the screenplay and dialogues of Rocky, tells Silverscreen India that the film is an action crime drama that follows the life of an individual gangster and tells a story of revenge. “It is set in contemporary Chennai. Rocky is the name of the protagonist played by Vasanth. This is a character-driven story and is purely fictional,” he adds.
While the filmmaker wrote the script in 2014, the film only went into production at the end of 2017. It was shot in 2018 in Rameshwaram, Dhanushkodi, and Chennai by cinematographer Shreyaas Krishna. Arun notes that most portions were shot in live locations with Ramu Thangaraj handling the art direction.
Speaking about the cast, Arun says Vasanth was signed first. He adds that Bharathiraja’s role will have a grey shade. Dubbing artist Raveena Ravi plays a small but pivotal character, which will be a driving force in Rocky, the filmmaker mentions.
Rocky’s music has been composed by Darbuka Siva. “About 40-45 minutes of the film will have an active background score, while the rest will be carried by ambient sounds. There are three songs, including a spoken word track. All songs have been shot montage-style,” says Arun.

The post-production of Rocky has been completed and the director reveals that the film is expected to release in approximately 100 screens across Tamil Nadu.
Apart from Rocky, Arun is also directing Saani Kaayidham, starring Keerthy Suresh and Selvaraghavan. “We have completed the shoot of Saani Kaayidham and it is now in the final stages of post-production. The film is expected to release sometime in early 2022. It will also be a revenge crime drama, but set in a different timeline,” he says.
