Speculations say that the film is inspired by the social reformer Jeevanandam, and Samuthirakani has named Sasikumar’s character after him. Anjali’s character is said to be inspired by Sengodi, the 20-year-old woman who died protesting against the death sentences awarded to Rajiv Gandhi assassination convicts. The title of the film was initially planned to be Raththam, but Sasikumar later suggested Nadodigal 2.
The 2009 film Naadodigal featured a group of friends who fight all odds to help a couple elope. The couple split up later, enraging the friends who each lost something important in their bid to help the couple.
