AR Murugadoss has not been arrested as yet, despite reports to the contrary. A tweet from producer of AR Murugadoss’ Sarkar led to the confusion, with a spokesperson for the Chennai Police dismissing the news as a rumour. Sun Pictures’ refused to comment on its tweet, though Murugadoss did offer an explanation on his social media account.

Murugadoss tweeted that the Chennai Police knocked on his door several times and left when they realised that he was not home. The Police, however, tell us that they were only there to provide protection for AR Murugadoss in light of the protests against his film by supporters of late TN CM Jayalalitha who was reportedly maligned in the film.

The spokesperson for the Chennai Police did confirm that several complaints have been made against the director regarding this issue and reiterated that no arrest was carried out by the Police or intended.

“We just asked the beat police in that area to go check up on AR Murugadoss since several protests had happened. It was not our intention to arrest him,”the spokesperson said.

“We have received several complaints against him. But we are yet to launch an investigation,” they added.

Several actors have come out in support of AR Murugadoss and his film in light of the events that happened today. Conspicuously absent in this scenario is the films lead actor Vijay. He has not commented on the issues thus far.

Earlier in the day, distributor Tirupur Subramaniam had confirmed that the film team had decided to remove scenes from the film that was considered to be defamatory. The production house, Sun Pictures, and director AR Murugadoss have not confirmed this news so far.

To alter an already censored film is a tedious process. After obtaining permission from the CBFC, the director needs to alter objectionable content and censor the new reel again.
