True to its title, rhythm is an integral part of Sarvam Thaala Mayam‘s teaser. Protagonist Peter Johnson played by G.V. Prakash, only comes next even though he is present in virtually every frame.
In Peter’s drumming montages and in his dancing shots, we hear this rhythm. It’s explicit, but is also implicit when he’s sitting in an examination hall, or is waiting for food to arrive. In the other static scenes, there’s at least a percussion track in the background.
Peter’s fascination is not just for rhythm. He’s also a die-hard fan of actor Vijay who is known for his dancing skills. In an interview the director of the film, Rajiv Menon said that Peter’s fascination for his superstar was more of a reflection of people his age, and their love for stars. And that as much as the movie is a musical, it’s also a social commentry, with the story centering on a lower caste boy’s struggle to break into the music industry.
The movie marks the cinematographer turned director Rajiv Menon’s return to direction after a gap of 18 years. His last movie was the Aishwarya Rai starrer Kandukonden Kandukonden. And during this time, apart from making ad-films, he also cranked the camera for Mani Ratnam’s Guru and Kadal.

Sarvam Thaala Mayam boasts of a cast comprising of musically inclined actors like Nedumudi Venu, Vineeth and Aparna Balamurali, and its music composer is A.R. Rahman. Along from Rahman, Rajiv Menon has also composed a song. Sarvam Thaala Mayam marks lyricist Na. Muthukumar’s last movie, and Madan Karky and Arun Raaja have penned lyrics for the movie too. The cinematography is by Ravi Yadav and editing by Anthony.
Produced under Rajiv Menon’s home banner of MindScreen cinemas, Sarvam Thaala Mayam has been selected for Tokyo International Film Festival. The movie releases on December 28, and its audio release is expected soon.
