Written and directed by debutant Mathi Maran, the film is produced by D Sabareesh under the DG Film Company banner and presented by Kalaippuli S Thanu under V Creations.

Speaking to Silverscreen India, Mathi Maran, who has worked as an assistant director on Vetri Maaran’s films such as Aadukalam and Udhayam NH4, says Selfie is an action thriller. “This story is set in Chennai and in simple terms, it is a college story but there will not be a single classroom shot in the film. It is an off-campus story which establishes that there is a life beyond classrooms for students. I have recorded one area of this off-campus life.”

Despite the sepia tone used in the poster, the director clarifies that Selfie is a contemporary film, not a period drama.

“GV Prakash plays an engineering student. All the characters will have shades of grey,” adds the filmmaker, who chooses not to reveal anything about Menon’s role.

On casting Prakash and Menon in the lead roles, the filmmaker notes that both of them have convincing acting work in their filmography. “Both have come from positions where they could observe how others perform. As a music composer, GV Prakash has seen a lot of films and has chosen this path due to his interest in acting. He’s been an actor for several years now and I have known him since my assistant director days. We share a good friendship. Gautham Menon, on the other hand, has directed big stars and has also acted in many roles under others’ direction. I wanted to cast him and directly approached him.”

Other cast members include veteran actor Vagai Chandrasekhar, Varsha Bollamma, and debutant Guna in pivotal roles.

Apart from acting, GV Prakash has also composed the music for Selfie. The film includes four songs, which are nearing completion. Rapper and indie musician Arivu is penning the lyrics for all the songs except one, which is written by Jayashree Mathi Maran.

“This film has seen two waves of Covid-19 and hence the delay in presenting it. I started to work on this film in 2019 and we went on floors in November that year. But, due to the pandemic, the production stalled. Selfie is currently in the final stages of post-production,” says the director.

The filmmaker adds that the release will depend on Thanu, but confirms that it will be a theatrical release.
