Jersey, starring Shahid Kapoor, has been postponed again, ahead of its scheduled release on Thursday. The film will now arrive on April 22, a week later than the previously announced date, giving a solo release to KGF: Chapter 2 this Thursday.
A statement from Aman Gill, the film’s producer, reads, “As a team, we have put our blood, sweat, and tears into Jersey and would like our beloved film to reach all of you in the widest way possible. Jersey will now release on April 22.”
This is not the first time the Shahid Kapoor-starrer has been postponed. Earlier, the film got delayed in December due to a surge in Covid-19 cases in the country. Before that, the originally scheduled release date had already been pushed from August 2020, due to the ongoing pandemic. The makers had announced that it would instead arrive around Diwali 2021, but it was pushed a third time, to December 31.
Jersey is a remake of the 2019 Telugu sports drama of the same name, which was led by actor Nani. It is helmed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, who also directed the Telugu original. The film also stars Shahid Kapoor’s father, actor Pankaj Kapur, in a pivotal role.
While no reason has been stated for the film’s current postponement, it is being speculated that the makers wanted to avoid a clash with the highly-anticipated pan-Indian movie KGF: Chapter 2. Further, it is notable that KGF 2 has had very good advance bookings and the Hindi version of the film has already earned around Rs 10 crore from pre-booking alone, with ticket sales particularly good in the Delhi and Mumbai regions.
