Actor and founder Makkal Needhi Maiam Kamal Haasan was in Thoothukudi, a day after 11 people were killed in police firing while protesting against the Sterlite Copper Smelting plant.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami announced a probe into the incident and announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakhs for the next kin of the deceased, reported Deccan Herald.
Haasan asked for an immediate shut down of the Sterlite industry and demanded to know who the perpetrators were behind the firing. Reports suggest that the actor-politician was booked for violating Section 144 imposed in various parts of Thoothukudi.
We must know who ordered this firing. It is not me but the victims who are demanding this. Merely announcing compensation isn’t a solution. This industry must be shut & this is what people demand: Kamal Haasan after meeting people who were injured in #SterliteProtest yesterday pic.twitter.com/43mntezXxH
