Last Saturday, actor Suriya announced that his upcoming biggie Soorarai Pottru helmed by Sudha Kongara Prasad of Irudhi Suttru fame will premiere on the OTT, Amazon Prime Video, directly skipping a theatrical release. Bankrolled by Suriya and Rajsekar Karpoorasundarapandian under their 2D Entertainment banner with Bollywood producer Guneet Monga and Aalif Surti co-producing it under their Sikhya Entertainment banner, the film is one of the most anticipated ones of the year.
While Suriya announced the news on his Twitter handle, he also penned a note to his fans and audiences requesting them to understand and trust in his decision. He also clarified that as a producer it was imperative for him to think about all of the people whose lives were dependent on the movie’s release. Notably, the actor did promise that he would revert to theatrical releases once all of the restrictions were removed from public gatherings.
Suriya also announced that he would be donating a sum of Rs. 5 crores from the amount generated through the film’s release to the needy, be it common people, cine workers, or healthcare workers.

The relief work began on Friday with a sum of Rs1.5 crore being distributed to various cine associations in Tamil Nadu. The event took place at the Bharathiraja Film Institute and saw the presence of director P Bharathiraja, President of TFAPA (Tamil Film Active Producers Association), actor Sivakumar, 2D Entertainment Co-Producer Rajsekar Karpoorasundarapandian and office-bearers of the respective film associations – FEFSI President RK Selvamani, Tamil Nadu Film Director’s Association Secretary RV Udhaya Kumar, Kalaipuli S Thanu for Tamil Nadu Film Producer’s Council, and actor Nasser for South Indian Artistes’ Association/Nadigar Sangam. Producers Suresh Kamatchi and Lalit Kumar also participated in the event.
Director Bharathiraja, actor Sivakumar, and producer Rajsekar handed out the cheques to the respective associations on behalf of actor Suriya who was not present at the event.
A lump sum of Rs. 1 crore was donated to the Film Employees’ Federation of South India (FEFSI) comprising a cheque for Rs. 80 lakhs to President RK Selvamani and a cheque for Rs. 20 lakhs to RV Udhaya Kumar, Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Film Director’s Association (TANTIS), an integral part of FEFSI.
Producer Kalaipuli S Thanu received a cheque for Rs. 30 lakhs on behalf of the Tamil Nadu Film Producer’s Council and actor Nasser received a cheque for Rs. 20 lakhs on behalf of the South Indian Artistes’ Association/Nadigar Sangam. Both the cheques will be handed over to the designated special officers of the respective bodies.

The disbursement details of the remaining Rs. 3.5 crores will be announced by the actor soon.
