Thalaivii is based on the life of late actor and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

The film was earlier scheduled to release on June 26, 2020, but was delayed multiple times due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It was rescheduled for release on April 23, 2021, but the second wave of the pandemic again forced the makers to postpone it.

Directed by filmmaker Vijay, the biopic is presented by Vibri Media, Karma Media Entertainment and Zee Studios in association with Gothic Entertainment and Sprint Films.

Aside from Ranaut, the film also features Arvind SwamiMadhoo, Nassar, Bhagyashree, and Samuthirakani, among others.

The announcement about the film’s release comes after the Tamil Nadu Government order on Saturday permitting theatres to reopen from Monday with 50% capacity, provided all the staff members are vaccinated.

Thalaivii, which will be released in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi, has been produced by Vishnu Vardhan Induri and Shaailesh R Singh.

In April, the makers had said in a statement that since the film has been made in multiple languages, they wanted to release it in all languages on the same day.

Producer Induri said in a statement on Monday, “As theatres are reopening across the nation, we are very excited that fans can enjoy the grand experience of the legend’s life on the silver screen. Jayalalithaa has always belonged to the cinema and bringing her story alive on the big screen was the only way to pay homage to this great legend and revolutionary leader.”

Recently, Akshay Kumar-starrer Bell Bottom also opted for a theatrical release on August 19 despite theatres in Maharashtra remaining shut.

Meanwhile, Ranaut also has a handful of other films in the pipeline, such as Dhaakad, Tejas, and Emergency.
