The makers also revealed that, like Vijay’s Master (January 2021), Thalapathy 66 too will be a Pongal release. The film is set to hit theatres in time for Pongal 2023.

While Vijay has previously collaborated multiple times with Prakash Raj (Ghilli, Sivakasi, Pokkiri, Villu) and Prabhu (Theri, Puli), Thalapathy 66 will mark his first collaboration with both Sarath Kumar and Jayasudha.

Apart from these actors, earlier in April, it was announced that Rashmika Mandanna will star opposite Vijay in Thalapathy 66, marking her first film with the latter.

Thalapathy 66 is backed by producers Dil Raju and Shirish under the Sri Venkateswara Creations banner. While the film was officially announced in May 2021, it was launched with an inaugural ceremony in Chennai in April, followed by the regular shoot.

Speaking to Silverscreen India, a source in the know, on condition of anonymity, said, “The Chennai schedule has been completed and the team is currently filming in Hyderabad. Vijay sir has already joined the ongoing schedule there and this one is an important leg of filming, where crucial scenes will be shot. This schedule is expected to go on for quite some time.”

The source also added, “This is a film featuring a big ensemble and there are a few more prominent cast members, who will be announced shortly. Thalapathy 66 can be called a commercial entertainer.”

The story and screenplay of the film are by Paidipally in association with Hari and Ashishor Solomon. Thalapathy 66 is being shot by cinematographer Karthick Palani, with KL Praveen in charge of the editing. The film’s crew also includes composer S Thaman, marking his first project with Vijay.

Vijay was last seen in Nelson Dilipkumar’s Beast, which released in theatres in April. The film is set to stream on Netflix from Wednesday.
