The theatrical rights of Vijay’s Theri in Kerala have been sold to Carnival Pictures and Friday Film House at a record price of Rs.5.6 crore. This is the highest amount paid for any non-Malayalam film in the state, surpassing the previous record held by Shankar’s I, which was sold for Rs 5.35 crore. I went on to collect 18 crores at the box office in Kerala, the highest by a non-Malayalam film.
Vijay has several fan clubs in Kerala, and his films have always been well-received in the state. However, reports say that there were not many takers for Theri, thanks to the Puli debacle. Reportedly, Prithviraj Sukumaran’s August Cinema was one of the frontrunners for the rights of this film, which is due for an April 14th release.
Directed by Atlee, the film features Vijay in three avatars. It also stars Amy Jackson, Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Mahendran.
