‘Harvard University Should Be Proud To Have A Tamil Faculty’: Vairamuthu

Poet-lyricist and one of the strongest proponents of Tamil language, Vairamuthu donated a sum of Rs 5 lakhs to the Tamil chair at the University of Harvard in the US.

At the event in Chennai on Tuesday, Vairamuthu talked about the historical significance of Tamil, an ancient language with over 3,000 years of tradition, and said that Tamilians should be proud that it is among the seven languages to have a chair at Harvard.

In the recently concluded Chennai International Book Fair, Vairmuthu’s books were sold for almost Rs 5 lakhs which was donated for the development of the Tamil chair. He added that he’s grateful to the people who have supported him throughout his literary career and termed the event as a platform for the ‘lions to be united again’, as it was attended by his contemporaries like poet Kandaswami and Manushyaputhran.

He took the opportunity to thank DMK supremo Karunanidhi and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for making it possible for Tamil to attain the status of classical language.

Film personalities like Kamal Haasan, A.R Rahman, Vishal, G.V Prakash and Karunas have donated to the Tamil chair previously.
