Time and again Indian filmmakers have delved deep into Indian history to bring out and characterise certain time periods and historical figures. Films like Mughal-E-Azam, Lagaan, Mangal Pandey, Iruvar and Kaaviya Thalaivan have chronicled the country’s history through fictionalised stories.
Padmaavat, an epic poem written by 16th Century Sufi poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi, was adapted to screen by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. But a group of secluded minds attempted to suppress the director’s vision of this mythical portrayal. Their violent protests triggered the ideologies and beliefs of a certain community as they charged against the movie.
There are some promising historical dramas in the pipeline. In the light of the widespread protests against Padmaavat, the question remains whether the makers of these films will face a similar predicament.
