Vijay Sethupathi has said that his pride as a Tamilian would prevent him from accepting any award from the Central Government. At a recent press meet for his Karuppan, the actor said:

“If I am ever forced to choose between my identity as a Tamilian and an award from the Central Government, I will choose the former. I am always for and with the Tamil people,” the actor said.
If he is honoured with a National award for his performance, Vijay Sethupathi declared that he will boycott it. “I am extremely angry with the Central Government. Receiving an award from them at this juncture is tantamount to betraying my people.”
