Saranya Ponvannan is quite famous for her ‘mother’ roles. Velaiyilla Pattathari is no exception, for she plays Dhanush’s mother in the movie and shares screen-space with actor Samuthirakani, who is her on-screen husband. The popular song from the film’s OST, Amma Amma, is centered around her and Dhanush. “The movie has a lot of mother sentiment. From the title, you would expect a lot of action and romance, but VIP has some amma sentiment as well,” she revealed at the press meet yesterday.

On the other hand, actor Dhanush referred to Saranya as the ‘Manorama Aachi’ of the current generation. “In the late 80s and 90s, there wasn’t a single movie without Manorama in it. It is the same with Saranya ma’am these days. Only a person of her calibre can fill the gap left by Manorama,” the actor said.
Saranya’s career spans over 20 years, but she shot into prominence only recently. The actress began playing the ‘amma’ role in 2004, but it was only with Raam (with Jiiva) that she gained visibility. Ten years later, she is still playing mother, albeit to some of the biggest heroes in the Tamil film industry.
