The festival date is a hotly contested one, with films – big and small budget – vying for the date. Many filmmakers plan their production schedule keeping this date in mind.

The TFPC’s decision to create a process that will streamline the releases is significant as films cannot get a release date without the producers council’s approval.

With the TFPC giving its nod for Vishal’s latest action thriller, it is set to clash with Vijay’s film Sarkar with director A.R Murugadoss and Suriya’s NGK, also starring Rakul Preet Singh and Sai Pallavi.

However, the film has to clear another hurdle – get the approval from the censor board before it hit the screens .

Sandakozhi 2 is the sequel to Lingusamy’s film of the same name. True to its title, the hero is a testosterone fuelled man-of-the-soil who rushes headlong into fights. Keerthy Suresh takes over from Meera Jasmine as the female lead. Raj Kiran, on the other hand, gets to reprise his role as the village elder. The project was initially announced in 2015, but was dropped later. Vishal blamed it on director Lingusamy’s lack of commitment. It was only in 2017 that the film production began in earnest.

Actors Manjima Mohan, Akshara Haasan were all considered for the role of the female lead in Sandakozhi 2 before Keerthy Suresh stepped in. Varalaxmi Sarathkumar has a major role in this project that has music by Yuvan Shankar Raja.

A spokesperson said that Meera Jasmine will be seen in an extended cameo in the film; and dispelled rumours that Keerthy Suresh had taken over her role from the original.
