The New Year’s weekend has no new mainstream Hindi films releasing, so the onus is on Tamil films to entertain. Two horror-comedies and two love stories are all set to battle it out at the box office this week.
Balloon (Tamil)
Balloon is a horror film directed by debutant Sinish, starring Jai, Anjali and Janani Iyer. The film is produced by TN Arun Balaji and Kandasamy Nandhakumar of 70 MM Films, along with stunt choreographer-turned-actor Dhilip Subbarayan of Farmer’s Master Plan Production. The technical crew includes cinematographer R Saravanan, editor Ruben, stunt choreographer Dhilip Subbarayan, dance choreographer Sherif, costume designer NJ Sathya, and art director Shakthi Venkataraj. Music is by Yuvan Shankar Raja.
The film even had a promotional song called ‘Neenga Shut Up Pannunga‘, Bigg Boss star Oviya’s popular catchphrase.
Ulkuththu (Tamil)
An action comedy, the film is directed by Caarthick Raju and stars Dinesh, Nanditha Swetha, Bala Saravanan, Chaya Singh, and others. The project was announced in 2014, officially launched in 2015, and wrapped up in 2016. However, the release continued to get delayed.
Predominantly shot in and around Muttom in Nagercoil, Tamil Nadu, the shoot was completed in 45 days. Music is by Justin Prabhakaran.
Kalavaadiya Pozhuthugal (Tamil)
Starring Prabhu Deva, Bhumika Chawla and Prakash Raj, the film was supposed to have released seven years ago. Directed by Thangar Bachan, the film is a romantic one that sees Sathyaraj playing Periyar EV Ramasami.
Edited by National Award winner B Lenin and with cinematography by Bachan himself, the film is Prabhu Deva’s best, says the filmmaker in this interview.
Sangu Chakkaram (Tamil)
A fantasy horror comedy starring children, the film is directed by Maarison. Stunt master Dhilip Subbarayan plays the hero here, along with Punnagai Gheetha.
Bankrolled by Cinemawala Pictures, Leo Visions, and Diya Movies, the film has music by Shabir, a singer-songwriter and music composer from Singapore.
