Nayana Sooryan, an independent filmmaker from Kerala, was found dead at her apartment in Trivandrum on Sunday. The exact cause of her death is unknown.
The mother of the 28-year-old had alerted her friends when she failed to respond to multiple calls. Her friends entered the house and rushed to the hospital, but the doctors declared her brought dead. The police said that the cause of death could be ascertained only after a postmortem report.
Nayana Sooryan, a native of Karunagappilly in Kollam, was active in the Malayalam film industry for close to a decade. She was an assistant to the veteran filmmaker Lenin Rajendran. She started her career by working with him on his 2010 film Makaramanju. She also worked as an associate director to the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy chairman Kamal on his film Nadan. She worked under Jeethu Joseph and Dr. Biju too.
In 2017, she made her solo debut with Crossroads – an anthology of ten films in which she directed the first segment Pakshikalude Manam starring Mythili and Vijay Babu.
She had been working as Lenin Rajendran’s private secretary ever since he was appointed as the chairman of the Kerala State Film Development Corporation (KSFDC). Lenin Rajendran died in January earlier this year, aged 67. His death seemed to have had a severe effect on Soorya, reported ToI.
