Spike Lee, the American film director and producer who won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for his film BlacKkKlansman, will be producing the upcoming Netflix film Gordon Hemingway & The Realm of Cthulhu directed by Stefon Bristol.

Netflix made the announcement on Tuesday through a press release.

Gordon Hemingway & The Realm of Cthulhu is “set in East Africa, 1928, where the roguish Black American gunslinger Gordon Hemingway teams up with the elite warrior Princess Zenebe of Ethiopia to rescue their kidnapped regent from an ancient evil”.

Hank Woon, the American author, game designer and screenwriter, has written the original screenplay with additional revisions done by both Woon and Fredrica Bailey.

Lee had also directed, produced and co-written the American war drama film  Da 5 Bloods, that premiered on Netflix in June 2020, making Gordon Hemingway & The Realm of Cthulhu his second collaboration with the streaming giant and Levin, who had worked with him on Da 5 Bloods.

Gordon Hemingway & The Realm of Cthulhu also marks Bristol’s second directorial collaboration with Netflix. Bristol made his directorial debut in feature films with See You Yesterday (2019) that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and was released globally on Netflix. The film was co-written by Woon and Bailey. The time-travel adventure film won the Best First Screenplay at the 35th Independent Spirit Awards.

Chris Smith to Direct ‘Operation Varsity Blues’ for Netflix

Chris Smith, the director of Fyre: The Greatest Party that Never Happened, will be directing Operation Varsity Blues for Netflix, based on the college admissions fraud of 2019 in the United States. It will premiere on March 17.

According to Deadline, the story’s synopsis reads: “An examination that goes beyond the celebrity-driven headlines and dives into the methods used by Rick Singer, the man at the center of the shocking 2019 college admissions scandal, to persuade his wealthy clients to cheat an educational system already designed to benefit the privileged. Using an innovative combination of interviews and narrative recreations of the FBI’s wiretapped conversations between Singer and his clients, Operation Varsity Blues offers a rare glimpse into the enigmatic figure behind a scheme that exposed the lengths wealthy families would go to for admission into elite colleges, and angered a nation already grappling with the effects of widespread inequality.”

Smith also executive produced Netflix’s Tiger King and will work with actor Matthew Modine for the upcoming documentary.

The 2019 scandal had rocked USA after some big names, like Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman of Desperate Housewives, were among the 50 people indicted in a widespread college admission bribery scandal. They were charged of paying William Singer, an admissions consultant, $25 million over eight years, as reported by CBS News.

The racket included the administrators of the standardised tests, ACT and SAT, aimed for undergraduate admissions, and universities such as Stanford, Yale and University of South California, that aided the children of the 50 parents charged, to cheat during the tests, and tamper with their eligibilities, labelling them as athletic recruits. An example of the same was released by Netflix as an audio clip.

The film will be based on the FBI investigation of the alleged scheme, originally named Operation Varsity Blues, and the information that the agency had gathered by tapping onto the phones of the ones charged.

Kamakhya Narayan Singh on His Film ‘Bhor’: I Wanted to Tell a Story Without Creating Conflict

Bhor (dawn), Kamakhya Narayan Singh‘s directorial debut, deals with sanitation issues that breed across India. With Bihar’s musahar or the ‘rat-catchers’ community at the centre of the plot, Bhor revolves around a girl named Budhni, who is the first musahar to rank first in the district, and the community’s reaction to her education and demand for a toilet in her house.

With no concept of the oppressed and the oppressor, Bhor, starring Saveree Gaur, Nalneesh Neel and Devesh Rajan in lead roles, is the closest cinema can come to reality. And that was exactly what Singh’s motive was- to tell a story “without creating conflict”.

“What is cinema? It is about what you see. I bring something new to the table. There are certain stories unheard of, or little told, we have the responsibility to bring that to people. So, I felt that in the last three to four decades, we have been telling that thakurs [the upper castes] are really bad. But I wanted to bring out a story, where without creating conflict within society, without creating conflict within yourself, you can bring changes. And that was the main view of the story,” he said in a conversation with Silverscreen India.

Budhni and the plot

Speaking about Budhni, played by Gaur, Singh said, “See, in that community, even the boys could not do something like that. She is not the first musahar woman to top, she is the only musahar. So, she is ahead of the boys as well. Her thoughts, ideas are sharper than the boys in her society.”

“Then, the reaction of the educated members of the family to issues of sanitation, as against that of the uneducated members of the family. When we thought of doing this story, I thought ‘why not a thakur?’ because I have seen these people [thakurs] in and around my village, and a lot of them are good and helping people. So, I wanted this to come out,” he said.

While the thakurs have not been demonised, the women are not collecctivised either. Despite several women on-screen, only Budhni has dialogues. She does not gather the women, nor lectures them on self-respect, although she is mindful of her own.

Interestingly, it is the thakur that Budhni’s husband’s family serves, that decides that Budhni be sent to school even after marriage.

Singh said,”Whatever we say, we are a male-dominated society. It is men who decide for women. You go to villages, things have changed now, but it’s a slow process. If you show one woman reacting and others silent, then that’s because they are educated the way she is. So, she reacts to it and you need a man to help her out, on one hand, and it is also the same man who does not accept her. It is from both perspectives. So, it is a society where the men make all the decisions on behalf of women. So, the protagonist’s marriage is fixed by the father with the advice of the mother. It is not the mother who decides.”

Singh’s film does not provide the afflicted women with a discourse or guidelines to help end their misery. He said, “Because I am an activist, I have seen movements happening across the country. They are a single person discourse and because everyone has their feeling in their hearts. Once a person starts speaking, then it becomes a movement. The media takes it up and everything happens. Similarly, here, Budhni takes the lead, and slowly people come. That’s what the ending was. When people came in support of.”

Who are the Musahars?

Hailing from Bihar but born and raised in Guwahati, Singh said, “I have been seeing musahars since childhood. For me, I have always seen them differently. Musahars are poor people but very simple people. They did not cry for anything. So, I thought of the ways in which the development has not reached them, the reservation, the political independence, what others [other lower castes or Scheduled Castes] get, they have not been able to do it. And they are independent people, as in, their soul is independent. So, when they receive education, especially girls from their society, how they react to it. Their reaction to when a member of the family is educated, while others are not. So, that is the story.”

Musahars belong to one of the lowest rungs among the Scheduled Castes and are far from enjoying any benefits of government schemes.

Sanitation

“People have been talking about sanitation for the last few years. Jayram Ramesh and the UPA [United Progressive Alliance] government also spoke about how the railway lines are the largest toilets of the of the world. Then [Narendra] Modi ji came in and made the Swachh Bharat movement. So, it struck me then that why not make a movie on sanitation. Another point was that of the musahars. Musahars are also beneficiaries. Then the third point was that because I have seen musahars quite closely and am an activist as well, I thought this was the right time to make a film on the issue,” Singh said.

The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan or Clean India Mission was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014 to improve waste management and end open defecation. As a result, films like the Akshay Kumar-starrer Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, were released and renowned public figures brought on board to help spread awareness.

“My film is not about toilets. My film is about the last person, how he reacts to toilets, to education, to everything,” Singh said. In Bhor, the thakurs go out in the open to defecate.

Discrimination, in the conventional sense of the term does not exist.

Migration

However, despite the general issue being sanitation across India irrespective of rural or urban spaces, Bhor highlights rural India. Singh explains that he wanted to “highlight the migration issue more than the issue of sanitation” that is at hand.

“So, you go [to the city] for the good things but you get only the money. Apart from that, everything goes worse in the city. So, migration causes more problems. So, if you start looking for more options in the villages and the government starts working in the villages more, then I think migration won’t happen and that is why I wanted this to be highlighted. I kept the last fifteen minutes for that.”

Making of Bhor

“I wrote the story central to a village, and we know some known actors, so we thought why not approach them. Because I am a documentary filmmaker, I wanted it to be very real. They said that they did not have two months’ time to do workshop. Most of our actors live in the urban areas. So, they had lost their empathy. The way they have to talk, the way they have to be behave, as the villagers. So, for that they needed time. And I was a first time director,” Singh said.

Casting director Dilip Shankar suggested Singh to try fresh faces.

“We thus, went to the villages. So, it’s not just the migration of labours, it is the migration of actors as  well because most of the actors in Bihar have migrated to Delhi or Mumbai. And so, had to audition in these cities. Took them to the village for a couple months for the workshop, which was not for acting, but for their body language. That took two months and you can see them now.”

Bhor is not a star-driven film and was shot in a village that falls midway between Nalanda and Nawada, in Bihar.

“It was not like I did not have the money and had to seek help from my friends. I had the money and thus, wanted to hire the best. But when I approached them I realised that they are more open to working with bigger banners and more experienced directors. And I was a first time director.”

In one such instance, he shared, “I wanted a costume designer to work for me. He said, ‘I will come to Patna, give you all the costumes and my assistants will help you there at the location’. Because the location was 100 kilometres from Patna, he did not come on board either. And the kind of costumes they wanted to do for me was to buy new clothes, dye it in tea that will make it look worn-out and used. I did not want that. So, we started sourcing out clothes from the villages, and making our characters wear them. So, this was a hurdle in itself.”

“I am not a big director but I wanted to pay everyone. So, when we went over-budget, I was a bit skeptical because I was told that no one would buy my film. But it went to the festivals, was accepted well, people started talking about it and now it’s on MX Player, I am happy and satisfied.”

Calling the digital space, a “democratic” space, he said, “It has become more democratic. If your content is good, people will like it. You definitely make films for the biggere screens with more detailing, but OTT has given you the opportunity where you at least reach the audience. At least people watch it and talk about it. So, it’s a good thing. It is the democratization of the entertainment industry where the people have the option to consume different types of products, and the makers have a platform to reach out to people.”

The film took one year to shoot and then premiered in almost 20 film festivals across the globe.

Singh’s next project is going to be a geo-political film. He said, “I am thinking of something on Jammu-Kashmir and will come up with a script soon.”

Bhor is streaming for free on MX Player.

Tamil Film Producers Council Says Producers Need Not Submit Letters Temporarily Regarding Film’s Release on OTT Platforms

The Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC) said in a press release on Monday that film producers need not submit any letters to the Exhibitors Association regarding their film’s release until a final decision is taken between the two bodies.

According to the press release, the TFPC and the Theatre Association held a meeting and decided that producers need not provide any letters temporarily.

The press release also mentioned that until a final conclusion is reached, if any producer is asked to provide a letter then they should contact the TFPC regarding the same.

Talking to Silverscreen India, TFPCvice president RK Suresh, said, “The decision that has been taken isn’t final. This is a temporary settlement till the two bodies come to a proper agreement. There’s a big meeting going on today let’s wait to see what happens in that.”

S Sridhar, joint secretary of the Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association, told Silverscreen India that their decision to fix a time period before a film can premiere on an OTT platform after its theatrical release will not change.

“The TFPC requested us to not ask for any letters regarding any film’s release on OTT after theatrical release till the next and final meeting is held between the two associations. The next meeting is supposed to be held this week,” Sridhar said.

” We are very clear that films should release in OTT only after 30 days of running in theatres. Because if there is no specific time period set and films can go to OTT whenever the producers wish then the audience won’t spend Rs 120 to go see it in a theatre. They will rather watch it on the OTT platform for which they have already taken a subscription. Our decision will be the same in the next meeting. We will either need a letter from producers or we can come up with some other form of agreement regarding the number of days,” he said.

Recently, Vijay‘s Master released on Amazon Prime Video  after only 17 days of its theatrical release. After this, the Tamil Nadu Film Exhibitors Association decided that films will have to run in theatres for 30 days before premiering on an OTT platform.

Meanwhile, makers of the Tamil film Aelay decided to skip its theatrical release and opt for a direct television premiere. While no reason was given, a statement by the Tamil Film Active Producers Association supported the film’s makers. The statement said that despite the producers opting for a theatrical release, cinema hall owners objected to the film releasing on a streaming platform soon after its theatrical release.

Music: Actor Kate Hudson Says Backlash on Her Latest Film Creates Dialogue on Neurotypical Actors Playing Neurodivergent Characters

Kate Hudson, the Hollywood actor and Academy Award nominee, spoke about encouraging the criticism that her film Music, directed by singer-song writer Sia garnered after it was nominated for the Golden Globe Awards in two categories.

Hudson, who appeared on the Jimmy Kimmel Live! show on Friday, said that the backlash raised an “important dialogue about neurotypical actors portraying neurodivergent characters”.

Sia had been criticised for casting Maddie Ziegler, a neurotypical actor, as an autistic girl. Reviews of the film brought the singer and Ziegler’s performance under fire for an exaggerated portrayal.

The New York Post review called it a “heightened imitation” and wrote “and, as played by Ziegler, who is not autistic, always has her mouth open with a wide grin and exaggerates facial expressions like she’s Marcel Marceau. It’s an uncomfortably heightened imitation that never rings true and verges on mockery”.

Critics also stated that the film showed wrongful portrayal of restraint used to tackle outbursts.

In the film, Zu (Hudson) is newly sober when she receives news that she is to become the sole guardian of her half-sister named Music (Maddie Ziegler), a young girl on the autism spectrum. The film explores two of Sia’s favorite themes: finding your voice and creating family, as per the synopsis given by the Golden Globes.

While the film was nominated in the Best Picture for a Musical/Comedy category, Hudson bagged a nomination in the Best Actress-Motion Picture- Musical/Comedy category.

“The spectrum is so wide and should be approached with far more conversation and understanding of how can we be more representative, what are the best ways to do that,” Hudson told Kimmel.

“We are story-tellers. We want to tell the best stories we can. There is no one who wants to upset anybody. When people feel upset about anything, it’s our job to listen and encourage more conversation with other people who want to tell these stories”.

She further said, “I think when people see the film, they will see the amount of love and sensitivity that was put into it.”

Music released on January 14 in Australia and was made available for on-demand release from February 12. It features debutant actor Maddie Ziegler and Hamilton actor Leslie Odom Junior, apart from Hudson.

Time’s Up Condemns Accused Director Brett Ratner’s Plans of Returning to Films

Time’s Up organisation, the movement against sexual harassment at workplace, condemned accused filmmaker Brett Ratner’s decision to return to films.

On February 19, Deadline Hollywood reported that Ratner will return to films with his “long-time passion project about pop duo Milli Vinilli”. This came after The Rush Hour director laid low for a few years after seven women in November 2017, including actors Olivia Munn and Natasha Henstridge, accused him of sexual misconduct and harassment. As a result, Warner Bros. cut off all ties with Ratner, whose last release was the 2014 film Hercules. Following the allegations, Ratner, whose company was involved in co-financing a superhero film, was also dropped from Wonder Woman 1984, as per NME.

Millennium Media is reportedly teaming up with Ratner’s RatPac Entertainment on a Milli Vanilli biopic, and is launching sales ahead of the upcoming virtual European Film Market, reported Deadline.

Time’s Up released a statement condemning Ratner’s plan on Sunday.

President and chief executive officer Tina Tchen said in the statement, “TIME’S UP was born out of the national reckoning on workplace sexual harassment. Our movement is a product of countless courageous acts by many survivors, including those who spoke out about what they endured at the hands of Brett Ratner.”

She added, “Not only did Ratner never acknowledge or apologize for the harm he caused, but he also filed lawsuits in an attempt to silence the voices of survivors who came forward – a tactic right out of the predator’s playbook. You don’t get to go away for a couple years and then resurface and act like nothing happened. We have not – and will not – forget. And Millennium Media shouldn’t either. There should be no comeback. #wewontforgetbrett”

Ratner had filed a defamation suit against Melanie Kohler who, in 2017, had accused the former in a Facebook post of allegedly raping her in 2005. The suit was dismissed in 2018 after both Ratner and Kohler were said to have agreed to “move on”, reported Deadline. Kohler had also taken down the post later but stood by her statement.

The Time’s Up movement, initiated in 2018, is an offshoot of the #MeToo movement after Harvey Weinstein was called out by several female actors in Hollywood for sexual harassment.
