Pattathari, directed by debutant director A.R Sankar Pandi, with S.S Kumaran as the music director and Tharan as the lyricist, held its music launch earlier this week. The event held at Sathyam Cinemas was a lukewarm affair.

Anjana Rangan, the anchor of the show, began the event a good hour later than the schedule, by screening a small trailer – so small that one couldn’t get much from it apart from the fact that the film is full of fresh new faces. Following this, they played some sound tracks.

Pandi, who has worked with the director Kalanjiyam earlier, confirmed that the movie is set in Madurai. His intention is to show Madurai in a new light focusing on the middle and upper middle-class sections of the society, he said. The story is about 5 young men in pursuit of love.

Music director S.S. Kumaran of Poo and Kalavani fame has made a comeback through this film after a gap of two years. The crew was full of praise for his musical capabilities. A special mention was made of his son Ram Vaiko, who has been a great help to the music director. Vaiko even jokingly demanded a pay for moonlighting as his assistant.

Debutant lyricist Tharan, who has written all the six songs in the movie, was also praised by the director and the producer. Drawing inspiration from works of literature, and even ‘weather-man’ Ramanan, his lyrics are light and colloquial with much youth appeal, they said.

Shiva of Amma productions, first to exit the audio launch, was quick to rebuke the promotional event. He said the event made “zero impression” on him. Criticizing the manner in which the songs were screened – with lyrics on the screen – he claimed that the words on the screen made no impact on him. However, Kalanjiyam defended his protégé by saying that a seasoned producer like Shiva might have found the new ways of the youthful team a little too unconventional for him.

None of the cast members were present at the launch.
